File Extension 7Z
File extension 7Z identifies the compressed file format created by Igor Pavlov used on various systems mostly in commercial organizations. Users are not required to register or pay for this open source software, but donations can be made to support development of the 7Z format. As a compressed archive file, 7Z supports various data encryption, pre-processing and compression filters. Initially, the 7Z file format underwent implementation by the 7-Zip Archiver. Under the GNU Lesser General Public License terms, both the library and 7-Zip program are available to the public.

7Z features a very high compression ratio on the LZMA compression solution. However, for GZIP and ZIP formats, 7Z offers a 2 to 10 % compression ratio, which is a great deal better than that offered by WinZip and PKZip. The 7-Zip open source application features a strong AES-256 encryption that is in ZIP and 7Z formats. Additionally, it has the capability to self-extract. File extension 7Z, an influential file manager and its command line version is able to seamlessly integrate with the Windows shell.

7-Zip is also capable of localizing 74 languages and has extra plug-ins for the FAR manager. 7-Zip works well on the Windows ME/98/2000/Vista or XP operating systems. However, there is also a command line version port for the UNIX/Linux platform. The other main features offered by the 7Z file extension include an open and modular kind of architecture that enables any conversion, encryption or compression technique to be used. The compression ratios normally depend on the kind of compression technique that is to be used but they always maintain high ratios.

This file extension 7Z also has a strong AES-256/Rijndael encryption and supports large files of up to about 16 exabytes. The 7Z compression file format has Unicode file names and supports solid compression, where numerous similar files undergo compression in a single stream so as to exploit any redundancy that is normally inherent in other similar files. This file format also supports archive header compression. The open architecture of this file format enables the addition of extra future compression techniques.

The 7-Zip application creates 7Z archive file formats using file extension 7Z. Every archive may hold multiple files and directories. Since 7Z is a container format, size reduction and security of the file is achieved by use of a staked filter combination. The filters may consist of compression algorithms, encryption filters and pre-processors. The core 7Z compression technique makes use of a range of algorithms with the most common being LZMA and Bzip2.
